Describe your approach to redistricting. What processes and criteria should be used to draw Ohio's Congressional district lines? Struggling with an incredibly gerrymandered district, driving over 100 miles from one end to the other, is not the best way to create districts in Ohio, and it is not for the betterment of our citizens. It has been for the well-being of our elected officials. Thankfully, that will change, although I feel that the method to change it should be in place, so that directly after the census numbers are tabulated, it can be enacted. I think that the best way to draw lines should revolve around the larger city areas, like petals on a flower. For instance, I live in Madison County. I believe that we are more in alignment to Columbus (Franklin) County, but I believe that Xenia (Greene) which is also part of my district, is in more alignment to Dayton (Montgomery). And likewise, residents in the suburbs of Springfield have little in common with a citizen in Mt. Sterling, some fifty miles away. Districts should be selected strictly by head count, without regard to political affiliation. |

Under what circumstances is it appropriate for the state to restrain or limit local government decisions? Local decisions should generally be made by the villages, townships, and cities. They understand their issues and can find solutions. Leaders and citizens should be able to have a say on decisions regarding their town or village. Our constitution already demands that smaller entities (cities, villages, and such) follow its "rules". I believe that if a city, village, or township is affecting a neighboring entity's well-being, that would be the time when the state could step in to help mediate the issue. |

How would you implement a constitutionally compliant school funding system in Ohio? Look, I don't pretend to have all the answers. But I know that Ohio's school funding system was found unconstitutional over thirty years ago. Our Ohio constitution, Article VI (2) clearly says that the state shall make provision through taxation or otherwise for a "thorough and efficient" system of common (public) schools throughout the state for all of our children. The annual budget of the State of Ohio is roughly $33B. I believe that education of our children should be the first priority of this state, if we want to keep our best and brightest here in Ohio. Money comes into the state coffers from many sources. I am most concerned that it goes out of the state budget appropriately, for the benefit of all children, which in turn benefits our entire state. |

What would you do to ensure free and fair access to voting in Ohio? I believe that all Ohioans need to have their voices heard. The state should accommodate those voters with easy registration, ample time for early voting, voting by mail and convenient polling places. I believe in the extensive use of provisional ballots for the question of eligibility and identification of the voter. Our local Board of Elections can then quantify the details. |

Describe how you will work across political differences to solve problems. Thus far in this campaign, the main issues that I have discovered of the people in my district, is that they want a decent job with decent pay, and an opportunity for their kids to get a good education. They want access to affordable healthcare, and the ability to have a retirement with dignity. Frankly, solving those issues for fellow Ohioans should not have anything to do with party lines, and it is our job and responsibility to actually "represent" the needs of the citizens. We need to get back to “working across the aisle” for the benefit of the citizens of Ohio. |

What legislation concerning firearms would you support? I believe in common sense gun safety issues. Currently it is easier to purchase a gun, than to adopt a dog from the Humane Society. Does that make sense? The gun owners that I know have an extreme respect for the firearms in their possession. They keep them secured, follow all safety procedures, and are skilled in their use and storage. I believe in thorough background checks and some sort of system of registration for guns, just as we do for automobiles, boats, and other property. I realize that guns are here to stay, and I have no problem with that. But the rights of gun owners must be tempered with the safety and security of fellow citizens; and we must not bow to the pressure of gun manufacturers who simply want to make a profit at the expense of all else. |
