Voting Eligibility
Requirements to vote:
Ohio is not considered your voting residence when:
You will not lose your voting residency if:
- You are a citizen of the United States
- You will be at least 18 years old on or before the day of the next general election. (If you will be 18 on or before the general election, you may vote in the primary election to nominate candidates, but you cannot vote on issues or party central committees until you are 18)
- You will be a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days immediately before the election in which you want to vote
- You are not incarcerated (in prison or jail) for a felony conviction under the laws of this state, another state, or the United States
- You have not been declared incompetent for voting purposes by a probate court
- You have not been permanently disenfranchised for violating the election laws
Ohio is not considered your voting residence when:
- You have moved to another state and vote in that state
- You have moved to another state and intend to make that state your residence
- You moved to another state and continuously reside outside of Ohio for a period of 4 years or more
You will not lose your voting residency if:
- You leave temporarily and intend to return to Ohio
- You are absent from Ohio due to your services with the United States government or state of Ohio
- You have moved outside of the United States
Voter Identification Laws in Ohio
Ohio law requires each voter to provide an acceptable form of identification for voting. This I.D does not have to have a photo, but must be valid. Voters who cannot produce a valid form of I.D may cast a provisional ballot (a ballot cast but not counted until voter eligibility is proven).

Valid forms of I.D include:
- An unexpired Ohio driver’s license
- State I.D card with present or former address if the voter’s current address is in the official list of registered voters for that area or district
- A military I.D
- An unexpired photo I.D that was issued by the United States government or the State of Ohio, that contains the voter’s name and current address
- An original or copy of a current utility bill or bank statement with the voter’s name and current address
- An original or copy of a current government check or paycheck with the voter’s name and current address
- An original or copy of another government document that shows the voter’s name and current address (that cannot be a notice of voter registration mailed by a board of elections)
